Dr. Sheil is an Associate Professor and Vice-Chairman in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University. He received a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He also received an M.S. and Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology (Immunology) from University of Kentucky. Following postdoctoral training as a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fellow at Scripps Clinic and Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, Dr. Sheil joined the faculty of the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Sheil’s research interests include cytotoxic T lymphocyte recognition and response to foreign antigen, with particular areas of focus in transplantation, Type I diabetes, virus infection, and immunotoxicology. Dr. Sheil is currently a member of the American Association of Immunologists’ Education Committee and serves as a reviewer for The Journal of Immunology. He has served as an invited reviewer on several Special Review groups for National Institutes of Health grants and contracts as well as for the National Science Foundation and the Arkansas Biotechnology Consortium.
